Fire shatters dreams of many in the beginning of New Year
Taba Ajum
ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Fire incident, which created havoc on 2nd January at Dokum colony, Naharlagun, seems to have burnt down dreams of many families. As house after house went into flames, many of the families would not save their belongings and became hapless witness of seeing their houses being gutted down by fire. According to Naharlagun police sources, around 25 houses were ravaged down by disastrous fire rendering many homeless.
A day later when this reporter visited the site of fire incident, many victims had numerous traumas to share. The most affected of all seem to be young children who could be seen often asking their parents about their lost home. This colony had mix population of local Arunachalees and many migrant workers. Together they shared the feeling of sadness and were helping each other for life ahead.
What is hurting the victims most was absolute anarchy which followed fire incident. Most of the personal belongings, which they managed to take out risking their own life, have been stolen during commotion and they are yet to accept the fact that even in the midst of catastrophe, people would behave so inhumanly. Abul Kalam, a migrant worker, was almost in tears while sharing his plight. “I lost everything in this incident. Nothing is left except the clothes, which I am wearing. I did manage to save some stuff but they were stolen when I was busy trying to douse off fire,” he informed.
He went to add, “I have two kids and my wife to take care of. I do not know from where to start as everything has been burnt down including whatever money I saved.” Abul Kalam is not alone, like him many families are bracing themselves for agonizing fight to start everything afresh in this freezing winter.
For Gouranga Das, this incident has killed his dreams of giving better life to his family. “I was at Barapani bazaar when the fire started and soon I rushed to home. By the time I reached, my house was in fire and I would only save my Godrej almirah,” told Gouranga.
Many of the victims have put up temporary tents and are living with their families. The chilly winter conditions are making life miserable for them and they are pinning hope on state government to come up with immediate relief.
Local MLA, Techi Kaso, visited the fire site and assured all help to victims and donated essential items like 10 quintals of rice, salt and blankets to the victims. In the meanwhile, victims are working towards starting a new life in the challenging scene.

Fake ornaments – a threat to traditional ornaments
Dear Editor,
Flooding of ornaments and beads from across the borders of our state has created concern and has been threatening the very sanctity of our traditional ornaments and beads which have been handed down from generation to generation.
The importance and sanctity of traditional ornaments and beads of the Nyishi society is gradually becoming a thing of the past due to such influx of ornaments from outside the state. The originality and pristine antique value of traditional ornaments have been reduced to mere a play toys with the import of duplicate ornaments from Harmoti, Lakhimpur, Bhutan, Sikkim and Tibet etc.
The large scale circulation and illicit trading of fake ornaments is also great threat to economy, culture of the Nyishi community. One can understand the danger and damage caused by the fake currency note circulation in our country.
Therefore, it is high time for all conscious citizens, intellectuals and social organisations like Nyishi Elite Society, Indigenous Faith and cultural Society and other frontal organisations to take strong measures to check the menace of duplicate ornaments in order to save the defilement of our much valued traditional and local ornaments.

Unfair means not acceptable
Dear Editor,
We came to know from a notice published in a local newspaper that Nabam Kaha is not a bonafide student of Hindustan College. His name is not enrolled in the students’ academic list of Hindustan College, Itanagar Centre.
Therefore, Kaha is requested to voluntarily give up the key post of concerned student’s executive body.
No one has the right to forge any college’s identify card and participate in the key post of students’ organization by unfair means. Students’ organization is totally different from other constitutional or party organizations. So he is requested not to lead All Mengio Students’ Union.
We also appeal all the local public of Mengio not to interfere in the affairs of the students’ organization, and also appeal to all intellectuals, elected executive body of AMSU and other apex students body of the Papum Pare district to look into the matter.
Yours,
Chukhu Anung
